Dear Fellow Columbians:

On May 6-13, Columbia residents will have a special opportunity to participate in the Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week. As the honorary chair for this event, I encourage and challenge you to take part in this commuity effort.

During the Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week, I invite all Columbians to get around town under your own power. Biking instead of driving to work, or walking your children to school, are examples of activities we can do to increase our physical activity and see our city in a new way.

The Bike, Walk and Wheel Week Committee has put together a number of exciting events during the week of May 6-13. I hope you will get involved and commit to making in change in getting from place to place. Whether you walk, bike, or wheel for an extra block or an extra mile, you are making Columbia a healthier community.

In Gratitude,

Senator Chuck Graham
19th District

Hi Everyone!

We're gearing up for the 5th Annual Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week and it is going to be bigger and better than ever, with events scheduled for almost every day of the week, not to mention the Volunteer Breakfast honoring all our great volunteers and sponsors and the 2nd annual Celebrity Bike/Car Challenge, which will occur on the Friday preceding our event week!

Last year, about 1750 Columbians took part - more than doubling our numbers from the first year! Join the growing active transportation movement, by making a special effort to get to your destination under your own power as much as possible during the week of May 6-13 - by foot, on a bike, or in a wheelchair. Get some valuable workouts, feel great, and help Columbia identify our specific community needs for safe and accessible sidewalks, bike lanes and pedways! Click here NOW to sign up!

This year's Honorary Chair is Senator Chuck Graham and his letter of introduction is printed above. We look forward to his participation in many of our great events. Click here for the full schedule. Here are a few highlights:

  • The Kick-Off will take place on Saturday May 6 at Flat Branch Park, with a Katy Trail ride led by Mayor Hindman and myself as well as a hike on the trail led by Senator Graham. This will be a great time to pick up your event T-shirt. Local dermatologists will also be there to provide skin cancer screenings and hand out sunscreen.
  • On Monday night, we will be having a skating party for the kids at Empire Roller Rink with a discounted rate for the evening if they wear their Bike, Walk and Wheel Week t-shirt.
  • On Tuesday, the Mayor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health will be hosting a Fitness EXPO at the ARC with lots of local exhibitors.
  • The downtown scavenger hunt (for walkers, cyclists, wheelchairs) will be hosted by Grill One-5 and the PedNet Coalition on Thursday evening.
  • THE MAIN EVENT: Enjoy a free breakfast at one of our many breakfast stations around town on Friday morning, May 12, as you bike, walk, or wheel to work, school, or wherever you need to go. Click here for the map showing locations of all eleven breakfast stations.
  • Our final event will be held on Saturday, May 13 at Twin Lakes Shelter with live music from Ironweed Bluegrass Band. There will be drawings for GREAT prizes donated by our sponsors - you must be present to win.
  • Throughout the week, your bike is your ticket for a free ride on the city buses (as long as space is available). There is also a new "Wheels of the Bus" contest for Bike, Walk and Wheel Week participants - Click here for details.
The committee is hard at work and many people are investing huge efforts into the success of this great week, but we need YOU to participate! Mark your diaries for Saturday, May 6, and plan to help Mayor Hindman kick off our Fifth Annual Mayor's Challenge: BIKE WALK & WHEEL WEEK 2006
