Mayor Hindman Receives National Recognition
Mayor Darwin Hindman was recently presented with a Leadership for Healthy Communities Award at the Leadership for Healthy Communities Childhood Obesity Prevention Summit on Thursday, May 7, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
Hindman was in good company, as the other recipients of the award were New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg; San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom; and Chattanooga, Tenn., Mayor Claude Ramsey.
“I am extremely proud of this award,” Hindman said in a press release. “It brings national recognition to Columbia as a healthy place to live.”
Kathleen Novak, president of the National League of Cities, presented the award to Mayor Hindman and cited his leadership in establishing policies that encourage active living among the entire population and in particular among school age children.
“Childhood obesity is a serious health issue of epidemic proportions in this country with enormous personal and economic costs,” said Hindman. “To be recognized as a national leader in the effort is an extreme honor.”
The summit was sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson foundation, from whom PedNet has received several grants for program such as the Walking School Bus and Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities. Leaders of several participation national organizations attended the ceremonies, including the U.S. Conference of Mayors, National League of Cities, National Conference of State Legislators and others.
