The YouZeum

Youzeum logoIt’s a perfect partnership! PedNet advocates for people to choose a healthy lifestyle and the YouZeum teaches why a healthy lifestyle is so important!

The YouZeum, located at 608 E Cherry St., is an interactive health museum that invites people of all ages to explore the human body and the benefits of making healthy choices.

The idea for the YouZeum began in 1991 when founder Ann Cohen (now the Vice-President of the PedNet Coalition Board) and the Boone County Medical Society Alliance envisioned an interactive science center focused on health, wellness and fitness in Columbia. Since then the community has come together to fund, build, create, and run this fantastic health resource. The YouZeum officially opened its doors on May 1, 2008 and since then about 15,000 people have visited.

Been there, done that you say?  Executive Director Gwen Robbins wants you to know that one visit to the YouZeum is not enough. “If you came through this summer you haven’t seen it all,” said Robbins. “Every time you visit it is going to be a new experience.”

There are already new exhibit carts in place, the Photovoice Uganda temporary exhibit is there, and the Explore and More room for ages 7 and under will be opening soon. The YouZeum has also recently hired an Educational Director and plans are in the works for a whole slate of programs and classes geared toward people of all ages. “I want people to think of the YouZeum as a place to come and have fun. You will learn something while you are here, but really it is all about having fun,” said Robbins.

One recent event held by the YouZeum in partnership with PedNet was the annual Starlight Bike Ramble - a recreational bike ride through Columbia starting at dusk. On Saturday, September 27, more than 700 people took part in this family friendly event and all of the proceeds will go toward the YouZeum's ongoing development. The ramble is a family friendly event and all of the proceeds will go toward the YouZeum’s ongoing development. “The Starlight Bike Ramble is a perfect fit for our mission: it is fun, active, safe and affordable for families,” said Robbins. She would like to see this event become a family tradition with people coming back year after year.
