Safe Routes to School: Be a Walking School Bus Leader

How do I apply to be a WSB Leader?

Walking schoolbus leaderWe very much appreciate the time and care provided by our volunteer Walking School Bus Leaders. The program could not exist without great volunteers, and volunteers report that they find this a very fulfilling and worthwhile activity.

The 2010-2011 Walking School Bus program will begin on September 13, 2010.  An online volunteer application form will be available on this web page, on August 4, 2010.

Volunteer Leaders must:

  • Agree to a criminal background check
  • Be available between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. at least 2-3 days per week during the program, and
  • Attend a WSB leader training session.

How it works

Two qualified leaders are usually assigned to share a route. Before the program starts, one of the leaders will call each family to confirm the child's participation in the program, let the family know the pick-up time and location, and answer any questions the family may have.

The two leaders will then work out a rotation for who will lead the walk on each day. If the designated leader is sick, the first substitute should be the other leader for the same route if available. It is important for the Walking School Bus leaders to be punctual and thoroughly reliable.

A packet of information will be provided to each leader describing program policies on children's behavior, cancellation due to bad weather, etc. and including games and activities to make the walk more fun for the kids.

The WSB leader will also be asked to keep attendance records and report to PedNet's Walking School Bus Coordinator once a week.

At the end of the program, all WSB leaders are invited to attend the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
