Bike, Walk & Wheel Week 2010 Highlights

t-shirtNearly 6,000 people joined Darwin Hindman and Honorary Chairperson Carl Edwards the week of May 1-8, 2010 as they encouraged everyone to take the challenge and Bike, Walk or Wheel around Columbia.


Saturday, May 1

  • "Young at Heart Ride" with Darwin Hindman
    Twenty-four people enjoyed this leisurely 13-mile round trip ride and be back in time for the BWWW Kick-Off Celebration.
  • Family Ride to the Kick-Off
    Moms, Dads and kids had a fun family ride on the trail to Flat Branch Park.
  • Bike, Walk & Wheel Week Kick-Off Celebration
    began with a family celebration at Flat Branch Park. Participants enjoyed a pedal powered smoothie or a beverage from the root beer bar bike. There was a bike equipment expo, a bike polo match, and safety demonstrations.
  • Your Bike is Your Ticket on Transit May 1-8
    Individuals loading a bike on transit rode free all week!

 

Sunday, May 2

  • Cycle Recycle
    Refurbished bikes were given away on a first come, first-served basis.
  • Wheelchair Roll
    Wheelchair users and friends enjoyed a recreational roll around Stephens Lake Park with free wheelchair detailing and snacks after.

 

Monday, May 3

  • Confident City Cycling Class May 3, 5, 7 (Mon, Wed, Fri)
    Cycling students learned the skills necessary to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail.
  • Urban Bicycle Ride
    Riders took to the city streets to explore areas of Columbia by bike on this 20-mile guided urban bike ride.

 

Tuesday, May 4

  • Adult Beginner Bike Riding Lessons
    This free class used an easy, step-by-step method that had novices pedaling around the parking lot in no time.

 

Wednesday, May 5

  • Brown Bag Lunch Seminar: Commuting by Bike
    Participants brought their lunch and learned great commuting tips such as what to wear, bike maintenance and route planning.
  • MKT Secret Access Trail Ride
    Fourty riders took off from Flat Branch Park and learned all about the little access routes for popular neighborhoods and shopping areas from the MKT Trail.

 

Thursday, May 6

  • Try Transit Free Day
    Everybody rode city buses for free - all day long!
  • Bike Maintenance Workshop
    A record number of people crowded into Walt’s Bicycle Fitness and Wilderness Company to learn basic bicycle maintenance.

 

Friday, May 7

  • Walk to School Day
    School children, their teachers, and their families all joined together for a fun-filled walk to school!
  • Breakfast Station Day
    Glorious weather greeted morning commuters as they enjoy a free breakfast at one of the many Breakfast Station locations across the city.
  • Bike-In Cinema
    Participants enjoyed live music, local food, and the documentary film, Eco School House. Bicyclists and walkers were be entered into a drawing for a free bike!

 

Saturday, May 8

  • Mayor's Council on Physical Fitness & Health Expo
    The Mayor's Council hosted a family fitness expo featuring education, demonstrations and free health screenings.
  • YouZeum Starlight Bike Ramble
    A fun, family recreational bike ride through Columbia took place at dusk. Riders even got to take a turn around Faurot Field!
