Happy Earth Day!
Celebrate Earth Day in Columbia, this Sunday, April 27th from 12-7pm at Peace Park. Bus, bike, wheel or walk your way to PedNet’s booth and join in the celebration! We will be selling t-shirts and have some fun activities planned. Be sure to bring the kids as Shoester, our Walking School Bus mascot, will be making an appearance!
April 22nd marks an annual celebration of Earth. Events are held worldwide that advocate for and support environmental protection. Although many topics such as clean energy and “going green” are brought to the forefront for protection of the environment, one topic associated with Earth Day is especially near and dear to PedNet’s heart: transportation. Earth Day sheds a light on the importance of active transportation to help reduce harmful air emissions. Earth Day advocators combat this by hosting events that urge the importance of reliable and convenient public transit systems, as well as initiating steps to make cities more walk and bicycle friendly. These activists urge, just like PedNet does, that bicycling, walking and using public transit, gets people outdoors and active, thereby reducing the risk for obesity and associated health risks, and pollutants. Also, communities with more citizens using active transportation has been shown to benefit the economy by increasing sales at local businesses.
