Martin has been a bike rider since he taught himself how to ride a bike. He is the youngest of 7 from a single parent family growing up in the town of Ashton-Under-Lyne, an exurb of the great industrial city of Manchester, England. Money was tight so as a kid a new bike was out of the question. But he somehow managed by himself to cobble together a rideable bike from bits of other bikes when he was about 8 or 9, and used it to learn to ride a bike – a bit later than most kids but once he’d got it and felt the speed and freedom to travel he was hooked for life!

He is a bit of a greeniac, treehugger, avid recycler, hater of litter, renewable energy fanatic and social media environmental activist. Lover of the outdoors, hiker, rock climber, often combining those things with travel. Commuting by bicycle fits in with his environmental consciousness and has been a constant theme from college through to his recent early retirement from University of Missouri where he spent 18 years working in IT.

He greatly enjoys recreational cycling with his wife Barbara on the great network of trails around Columbia and beyond. In the last year or so they’ve taken up mountain biking, and trying and failing to keep up with their two high school boys. They say “Bikes-R-Us” and they are long time supporters of PedNet.
